Taking steps of worship with your finances
“What are the steps I need to take to correctly relate to money and material possessions?”
“What advice do you have for someone who wants to manage money in ways that glorify God?”
“I want to be more generous but I don’t know how. Can you help me?”
We always applaud people who are asking these questions. It is a sign that the Holy Spirit is working His grace upon their heart preparing them to experience a deeper level of intimacy with Him. Jesus said, “Where your treasure is, there will be your heart also.” Our hearts follow our treasure. When He is leading us to give financially He is actually inviting us into a deeper relationship with Him.
I think it is important to remember that everything can be arranged in steps. The first step is to simply start!
- START GIVING REGULARLY: Stay faithful and consistent with an automatic recurring schedule. Create an account and start online giving. With one clear faith decision, your obedience is set in motion! You don’t have to sign up each time you give; it’s automatic!
- BE A PERCENTAGE GIVER: The Bible refers to 10% of your income as the standard of obedience for giving (it’s called tithing). But more than 50% of regular churchgoers give nothing. If every attendee gave just 3-4% of their income, churches around the world would more than double their impact. If you’ve never given before, you can take a courageous faith step and begin giving the full 10% OR start low, work your way up, and give regularly. God’s Word doesn’t give any wiggle room- 9% giving is still 100% disobedience. A major faith thing happens for you at 10%.
One biblical strategy that many people disregard is to give God the firstfruits, or the first part of our income. In other words, when we talk about 10% giving we are talking about giving God the FIRST 10%, not the leftovers. Obedience to God includes giving Him the first part of our hearts, which cannot be done without giving Him the FIRST part of our income.
Once you hit the FIRST 10% obedience level you will be amazed at the grace of God you begin to experience in your marriage, parenting, friendships, vocation, and finances. If you’re already tithing, stay the course and watch God honor your faith. Don’t be surprised if God asks you to take another courageous step and give beyond what you could imagine. Remember, when you increase your faith to give, you simultaneously increase your faith to receive!
BE AWARE OF OTHER GIVING OPPORTUNITIES:
- Make a Year-end Gift: Your giving to LifePointe is always tax-deductible and every penny goes to furthering the gospel of Jesus Christ in Kansas City and around the world. There is no better way to maximize the power of your wealth! Special one-time, year-end gifts can be symbolic response of a renewed focus and commitment. This faithful act changes the giver from the inside out.
- Offerings Instead of Taxes: Many people discover that thousands of dollars can be given to their church presently going to taxes. Check with your accountant to see what might be sitting right under your feet!
GET MONEY MANAGEMENT HELP:
The truth is that many financial obligations we have now are due to choices made independent from God. This could be called financial mismanagement. It is interesting that we, as Christians, will be measured and rewarded in Heaven on a variety of things including how we manage our resources on earth, or more sadly, by our spending choices. Join a financial themed Small Group, or attend a training event that emphasizes stewardship. There are continuing education opportunities for personal financial counseling, inside and outside of LifePointe.

- PRAY THROUGH THESE PROBING QUESTIONS:
- What am I doing to teach my family about the joy of generosity?
- Where in my life am I rich in the things money can’t buy?
- If today were my last day, would I be happy the legacy my financial choices leave?
- What’s one thing I can do today to show a generous heart?
- Where have I seen the generosity of others directly affect my life?
- Are there areas of my life I hold onto, giving it more importance than it deserves?
